LINCOLN — More than three years of planning and fundraising in Hartington will culminate May 27 with the dedication of a veterans memorial in its business district.

The granite, steel and concrete memorial lists names of 1,060 veterans from the northeast Nebraska community who served in the military.

“Our goal was to deliver a memorial that we could all be proud of and that would last for many generations,“ said Dan Kathol, the chairman of the project.

The monument, he said, fulfills a longtime desire by local veterans to honor their fellow veterans. It sits on a lot donated by two local veterinarians, Drs. Ben and Erin Schroeder, who are featured on the reality show, “Heartland Docs, DVM.”

More than 320 individuals, families and businesses contributed money or labor toward the project. It cost $150 to list a veteran.

A dedication ceremony is planned May 27 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at the Hartington VFW Hall.
